Streamlining Virtual Machine Provisioning and Release Management at Wells Fargo’s Chief Technology Office

Wells Fargo’s Chief Technology Office (CTO) aimed to streamline its virtual machine (VM) request process by consolidating multiple systems and processes into ServiceNow. The VM in a Day initiative sought to cut provisioning time from months to hours. At the same time, the CTO formed a Compute Automation Release Team to manage technology releases and needed governance to standardize processes.

CMGT supported both efforts. For VM in a Day, CMGT created instruction guides, FAQs, and a Confluence knowledge base while hosting weekly office hours to address stakeholder questions. To establish release governance, CMGT developed workflows, approval processes, and testing requirements.

As a result, VM in a Day was successfully implemented across multiple offices, and the release team gained a structured governance framework, ensuring smoother, more efficient technology deployments. CMGT’s work helped the CTO modernize critical processes, increasing operational efficiency and adoption across the organization.
